Unique - What's Good

The three Dominican Americans who make up Unique grew up on a mixture of bachata, salsa and hip-hop. Bachata's influence is heard in those requinto guitars which are pitched a bit higher than your traditional guitars. The trio's back-and-forth melodies are straight-up R&B, while the entire track is a light, percussive groove.

Crooked Hook - The Captain Will Be Your Guide

When a band lists its influences as "sun, moon, air, water," you can be sure you're dealing with either a group of New Age healers or heavy, heavy rockers. In this case, we're dealing with the latter. This Connecticut trio pounds out primordial sludge of the highest order. "Slow and low, that is the tempo," as another trio once put it. Low-slung bass dirges, grooving but barely moving Black Sabbath riffs of epic proportions, and Joey Maddalena?s wastrel-like vocals combine into one monstrous package that will make you want to get in the van, pack up your BMX bikes, and drive straight into the sun. Lenka - The Show

Lenka is a pop singer from Sydney, Australia, whose song "The Show" is a sugary bit of indie-tinged sweetness. It's hard not to use the word "cute," but there it is and we mean it in the most endearing sense possible. The pianos are jaunty and give the track a bit of bounce that?s furthered by the subtle horns in the backdrop. Lenka's little-girl-lost vocals are the clincher, though. By the end, it's impossible not to start grabbing hands anonymously and trying to skip, frolic, and otherwise enjoy life.

Crooked Stilo - La Charanga

Brothers Victor and Johnny Lopez were raised in El Salvador and East Los Angeles. The strife of those environments, from civil unrest to gang warfare, is what drives the lyrical content of Crooked Stilo. The duo takes their back-and-forth vocal onslaught from hip-hop's greatest storytellers ? from Big Daddy Kane to Tupac. But rhythmically, they draw deep from the wealth of traditional Latin styles.
